Waste
Guesthouse Beach Break
All residual waste can be placed in the green container opposite the guesthouse. You can store glass, cardboard and plastic packaging in the containers on the ground floor behind the laundry room.

Quinta Charlotte
All residual waste can be placed in the black containers that you will find opposite the blue entrance gate of Quinta Charlotte, at Rua Cabeço dos Fornos 18. Glass, cardboard and plastic packaging can be placed in the colored containers that you will find here and there along the road.

Alarm
The alarm is switched off during the entire stay. To avoid false alarms, it is sufficient not to touch the installation.
Visits
Alcobaça
This city has only one major attraction, but it is one that counts. The massive Monastery of Alcobaça dates from the 12th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cozy city center is worth a visit.

Almagreira (Praia da-)
Beautiful beach. Top surf spot.

Areia Branca (Praia da-)
Beautiful white sandy beach. Very popular.

Bacalhõa Buddha Eden
An extensive garden crammed with all kinds of Oriental statues. Kitsch according to some, but worth a visit anyway. There is a small train for the children. You can have a nice lunch in the adjacent quinta and the wines are also excellent.

Baleal
The surfing paradise par excellence. This of course includes beautiful beaches. It is wonderful to walk around the peninsula. You can go out here in the evening.

Batalha
The impressive Monastery of Batalha (UNESCO) is a must see, it is a beautiful example of the Portuguese Manueline style of the 15th century.

Caldas da Rainha
Nice conference city that is difficult to reveal at first glance. It is pleasant shopping in the narrow streets and in the La Vie shopping center. Don't forget to visit some of the beautiful squares such as Praça 25 de Abril and Praça 5 de Outubro. A pleasant fruit market takes place every day on the Praça da Republica (9am-1pm).

Coimbra
Pleasant city with a beautiful historic center. The first Portuguese kings are buried in the Santa Cruz church. Coimbra also has two cathedrals (Sé Nova and Sé Velha, literally new and old cathedral).
The university is definitely worth a visit. The student restaurant of the law faculty is tasty and cheap and - you wouldn't expect it from the outside - from the terrace you have an excellent view over the Mondego valley. There is also a large covered fresh market with regional products for cheap. The botanical garden is beautiful and free.

Consolaçao
Beautifully restored fort on the south side of the extensive beach of Supertubos. To the left of the fort you walk straight down to an impressive breakwater .
D'El Rey (Praia)
Phenomenal sandy beach, good surf spot. Beautiful golf course too, very fashionable neighborhood.
Fátima
Place of pilgrimage, attracts 5,000,000 Catholic faithful every year. Only Lourdes (France) is more popular.
Foz do Arelho
Fashionable seaside resort with beautiful sandy beach. You can do kitesurfing, kayaking, surfing, sailing and of course sunbathing. Cycling or walking along the beautiful lagoon is also an option. Recently, a small group of flamingos chose the lagoon as their new permanent spot.

Islas das Berlengas (take boat in Peniche)
Incredibly beautiful, almost deserted island, accessible from the port of Peniche. Several companies offer half-day trips. Ideal location for diving and snorkeling, but also good for a walk. Be sure to visit the fort, at least if you are not afraid of heights. The path leading to it is narrow and the last few meters you walk across the sea via a stone bridge one and a half meters wide - without a balustrade. Those who dare will get a lot in return. This way you get a beautiful view of the many fish in the azure water from the bridge.

Lisbon
The secrets of the capital do not just unfold. It takes a long time to get to know this beautiful pearl and its many neighborhoods.
Here are some quick recommendations: if you only have one day to explore Lisbon, you can take a nice tour with a Tuk Tuk: the drivers are often young, enthusiastic and they know the most beautiful places. A ride on tram 28 also takes you through the old city center of the Alfama district. It's best to get there early: boarding in Martim Moniz is possible from 6 am.

The student district of Bairro Alto is very beautiful and connects to the even more beautiful artists' district of Chiado. There you can visit LX Factory, a site where the former warehouses are now occupied by artists, small shops and restaurants.
The Belém district is also worth a detour: you will not only find the Torre de Belém (national symbol of Portugal), the sailors' monument, the Jeronymite Monastery (where Vasco da Gama and Luis de Camões are buried), but also and especially the Pastelaria de Belém bakery, world famous for its pasteis de nata, cream pastries.

Museum lovers should not miss the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian on the Praça de Espanha. It is just one of the many museums in the capital.

It is best to park in the suburbs, near a metro station (for example Odivelas). The metro works excellently and the network is very easy to interpret.

Lourinhã
Welcome to the Portuguese dinosaur site par excellence: in addition to the Dino Parque dinosaur park, you will also find a dinosaur museum. Did you know that there is even a dinosaur named after Lourinhã, the Lourinhasaurus? Nice, especially for children.

Mafra
This municipality owes its fame to the presence of the Mafra Palace, an impressive Baroque-style palace built in the 18th century. It has 1,200 rooms and a total area of almost 40,000 m2.
However, Mafra has even more to offer. The University of Lisbon has a breeding program running here to protect the Iberian wolf (these animals still live in the wild in northern Portugal and parts of Spain). In this center you will be kindly shown around by enthusiastic students. You have a good chance of seeing the wolves, who live in semi-freedom.

Nazaré
Popular seaside resort. Although Nazaré may seem dilapidated at first glance, this former fishing village certainly has its charms. You can enjoy delicious food in various restaurants. You can take the tram lift to the higher old center of Sítio.
From October the waves become higher (up to 40m!), which is ideal for die hard surfers. The best view of this spectacle is from the large lighthouse. Due to the growing international attention, parking during the 'Big Waves' is a real nightmare, but that can't spoil the fun!
Anyone who stays here during the spring holidays can enjoy an extra attraction: Carnival is intensely celebrated.

Óbidos
Well preserved, walled medieval village. When you enter through the large gate (there is only one entrance and you really can't miss it), you are immediately drawn in by the pleasant shopping street. It is best to buy your ceramics somewhere else, it is very touristy and therefore expensive, but you will hardly find a more pleasant walk anywhere.
Maybe have a drink at the pousada (state hotel) located in the castelo. You have a fantastic view over the roofs of the village and the region. If you want, you can climb the ramparts and walk all the way around the village. In addition to its advantages, this also has a disadvantage: the walk is absolutely worthwhile and is free, but there is no balustrade on the one-meter-narrow wall. More information at the tourist office at the entrance.

Papôa
Uninhabited peninsula in our virtual backyard of Guesthouse Beach Break in Peniche. You can easily walk there from the guesthouse as follows: when you leave Beach Break and stand with your back to the guesthouse, you turn to the left. Then turn left again at the second street, towards the ocean. At the ocean you turn right. At Praia do Portinho da Areia do Norte, the small beach on your left (also the closest beach to the guesthouse and a surfing spot for advanced wave surfers), turn left. In the distance you can see the peninsula in front of you. You can walk all the way around the peninsula. That's definitely worth it!

Peniche
Welcome to this beautiful, walled port city with a well-preserved fortress, where the authoritarian ruler Salazar held his political prisoners. Now it houses the Liberation Museum, a must for those interested in the country's recent history. With the Bobbin Lace Museum, the city has a second museum that is worth seeing.
Peniche is of course best known as the European capital of wave surfing, with its many surf spots with phenomenal waves. The Wave Surfing World Cup is held here every October.

The city is located on a peninsula with a beautiful lighthouse on Cape Cabo Carvoeiro. You can of course also visit there.

The entire peninsula is currently in the running to become a UNESCO intangible heritage site. If you drive down the Marginal Norte and Marginal Sul, you will understand why: the ocean has eroded the cliffs here in a stunningly beautiful way. With Carreiro de São Marcos you can also visit one of the most beautiful bays in the world, at least according to Lonely Planet. The colorful houses seem to be stuck to the edge of the cliff.

Boats depart daily from the harbor to the Islas das Berlengas archipelago (see under 'Islas das Berlengas'). There is a beautiful shipyard in the harbor. Above all, Peniche is of course a beautiful fishing town, with many small-scale fishing companies: from canning companies, to fish processing factories to freezing factories: you will find it all here!

The Papôa Peninsula is also worth a walk, which we describe separately above (see under 'Papôa').

Rio Maior
The Mercado Santana is held every Sunday morning, a very large market where it is pleasant to spend time. The nearby salt mine with salt shoveled into pyramids is nice to visit before or after.

São Bernardino
Idyllic place with a fine sandy beach.

São Martinho do Porto
Favorite seaside resort of the Portuguese. Beautiful bay with handsome promenade. You will find numerous restaurants there. Very touristy.

Setúbal
A large, industrial coastal city that still has a certain charm. You can take the ferry to Troia, a very beautiful peninsula with beautiful beaches. Setúbal is located at the mouth of the Sado River, many birds have their nests there. You can also spot dolphins there.

Salir do Porto
A walking path was constructed with wooden beams in the dunes of Salir. At low tide you can walk along the beach of Salir to the ruins of a Moorish fortress. Traces of dinosaurs are visible in the rocks. A walk to the restored chapel of Santa Ana is also worthwhile. The beautiful beach is ideal for those who prefer to avoid the crowds

Sintra
It may seem far, but within an hour you can be in the middle of this Portuguese pearl. With its countless palaces along green hills, the many narrow shopping streets and the nice markets, romantic Sintra is an absolute must. Park your car somewhere in the lower city and then take the white city bus.

Tomar
This beautiful medieval city is best known for its Convento de Christo, a monastery built by the Templars that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you stand in front of the imposing building, the entrance is at the far left.

Swimming pool
What you need to know about the pool at Quinta Charlotte:
-
The summer cover ensures that the water cools down less quickly at night and heats up more quickly during the day. It is best to do it with two people to unroll to cover the pool, otherwise the rollator may end up in the pool - and you don't want that to happen. It is also best to roll it up with two people to open the pool.
-
Glass in and around the swimming pool is prohibited. Why? If the glass breaks and falls into the pool, it is virtually invisible. If there is a large amount of shards, the swimming pool may even have to be emptied.
